Zozibini Tunzi, the South African who won the 2019 Miss Universe Pageantry in Atlanta was short of words as her name was called as the winner of the 2019 Miss Universe. She was joined on the stage of the final round with Puerto Rico’s contestant Madison Anderson who emerged 1st runner-up and Mexico’s contestant Sofia Aragon who emerged 2nd runner-up and crowned queen at the event, which took place at Atlanta looking amazed. She is the 3rd South African to become Miss Universe and the first black South African to be Miss Universe.
According to highlights from the events of the pageant, the 26-year-old Zozibin Tunzi amazed the judges, audience and viewers all around with her captivating and astonishing response to the questions asked, first
‘’what is the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today?‘’
She responded ‘’ The most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership it’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time not because we don’t want to but because of what society has labelled women to be, I think we are the most powerful beings on the world and that we should be given the opportunity, and that’s what we should be teaching these young girls to take up space, nothing is important as taking up space in society ‘’.
Also when asked why she’s the right choice,
she replied ‘’ I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me with my kind of skin and my kind of hair was never considered beautiful. I think it’s time that stops today, I want children to look at me and see my face and I want them to see their faces reflected on mine.’’
Her responses were one that preached acceptance, liberation and beauty of communities that are viewed as underdogs in society.
More so, Zozibini’s life outside of pageantry is one which she devoted to liberating enslaved minds, her Miss Universe biography indicated that she has devoted her social media campaign to changing the narrative around gender stereotypes. She is a proud advocate for natural beauty and encourages women to love themselves the way they are.
Her win has brought joy and hope to not just herself and the African society, but also to everyone out there who is enslaved by the shackles of society’s social discrimination.
