21-year-old Babita Ahirwar was told that she was expecting a set of twins, but at 34 weeks gone the doctors revealed to her and her husband that the ultrasound showed, they were having a rare set of conjoined twins though not certainly determined how the twins would turn out looking until after the birth of the twins. She later gave birth to unusual conjoined twins, with three arms, two heads, same legs and same internal organs at the District hospital in India.
According to medical reports, conjoined twins develop when an early embryo only partially separates to form two individuals, although two babies will develop from this embryo they will still remain physically joined, mostly at the abdomen, pelvis or chest area they also could share internal organs, the embryo of conjoined twins start to separate between 13 to 15 days after fertilization which is abnormal because separation of twins occurs 8 to 12 days after fertilization.
Conjoined twins occur once in every 50,000 to 60,000 births, results collated show that’s that 75% are joined at the chest area, 23 per cent are joined at the hips, legs or genitalia area and 2% are joined at the head also, conjoined twins which share different internal organs have a higher chance at surviving unlike conjoined twins which share same internal organs, Just as in the case of Babita ‘s conjoined babies which share same organs.
However, upon the arrival of the set of twins, the young mother was devastated, ‘’My wife fainted after she saw the baby’’ said Jaswant her husband. He also added ‘’We are shocked to see them, we cannot believe our child has two heads, we were very happy to have two kids but it is one baby with two heads’’.
This rare form of twins is one that hasn’t been seen in a long while, Although operations have been performed on such twins before, it’s a saddening situation for the parents, notwithstanding they are kin on taking care of the babies just the way they are, ‘’This is my baby and I will raise him as he is, People are saying so many things but he is my baby and I will take him home, I don’t have money for an operation, as long as he is alive I will love him and take care of him’’ said the father. ’.
The conjoined twins have been put in intensive care and are under strict observation, according to the district hospital the conjoined twins would be moved to an advanced facility for treatment.
