The Cirque du Soleil has been inspired by Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg to create a piece for the stage in Berlin, the Canadian entertainment company disclosed on Thursday.
Its new acrobatic show “Nysa” is inspired by the environmental campaigning of the 16-year-old.
“We were in the process of writing the show and she popped … into our world at the same time, so to us it was just a sign that it’s a moment in the world right now where this is something important,” Creative Director Daniel Ross said.
It is a time “to put the power not only in the hands of young women but also in the hands of young people as they are the ones who will inherit the world that we live in,” he added.
According to Ross, “Nysa” tells the story of a brave young woman leaving the comfort zone of her life in order to widen her own horizon for a better future.
The performance is only due to be shown in Germany’s capital. Its premiere is scheduled for October 28, 2020.
“Nysa” is expected to run daily as is expected to attract around 400,000 visitors per year.
According to the German promoter, Marek Lieberberg, the programme has to take a break in February during the Berlin International Film Festival, the Berlinale, since both share the same venue, the Theatre at Potsdamer Platz.
The Cirque du Soleil was found in 1984 by a group of street artists in Montreal. The company claims that since then almost 200 million people have seen its shows.
