Selling fakes and ill treatment of workers led to Jumia's fall in Cameroon, Appstech CEO shares

The owner of the building Jumia maintained in Cameroon and Techpreneur, Rebecca Enonchong, CEO to Appstech has given insights on why she thinks the e-Commerce platform shutdown in Cameroon.

According to Enonchong, after watching the e-commerce company for close to five years, she couldn’t repress her emotions of anger after the company shut down on Monday.

She further debunked the reason for the company’s closure which stated it did not suit the Cameroonian market was misleading as the e-commerce platform mistreated her staff and laid people off for things considered petty in her opinion. Read her statements below:

“It was just a few months but already staff was treated with such disrespect. I remember of people fired for very petty stuff and They were ruthless. On the whiteboard in the morning, the goals for signing up sellers. Every noon and end of day, staff had to give progress reports.

“I admired their ability to stick to a plan but it also showed their total inflexibility in adapting to the market. The staff (all contractors because they weren’t allowed to hire), would come back with feedback from the field. No one cared. No adjustments would be made,” she tweeted, adding in another post that, “The site was full of fake merchandise.”
