A Hong Kong court ruled yesterday that Hong Kong’s ban on the facemask was unconstitutional as it infringes on the fundamental rights and freedoms of its citizens.

As a result, the ruling by justices Chow Ka-ming and Godfrey Lam Wan-ho, the police have announced that they would stop enforcing the ban while prosecutors seek an adjournment to reconsider the situation.

The ruling has divided the legislature with some calling the judgement an important recognition of Hong Kong’s constitutional framework while those on the mainland are of the opinion that the court sent wrong signals of interpreting the Basic Law to the protesters.

The judges plan to hear further submissions on the issue by Wednesday morning to determine the appropriate reliefs and costs of the 106-page ruling on Monday.
