Lagos State has recorded 400 cases of Gastroenteritis with as many as 11 deaths and an Emergency Operation Centre(EOC) has been activated to adequately tackle the endemic.

Gastroenteritis is a virus disease of the stomach and intestines and in this interview, this Public Health expert, Dr Tuyi Mebawondu disclosed that Gastroenteritis is a more of a sanitation disease than any other and it is shameful indeed.

He explained how Nigeria has been recorded as the second largest country with open defecation which allows for germs to quickly spread via water air and other such mediums thus propagating the spread of the disease-causing germs.

In addition, he noted that close to 40 million people are living below the poverty line with poor access to good water and thus are so much more susceptible to the disease.
