Researchers discover new Strain of HIV since the year 2000

A different strain of HIV has been discovered yesterday, the 6th of November, 2019 almost 20 years after the last strain was discovered in 2000.

The article was published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and has been labelled HIV-1 subtype L. The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr Anthony Fauci has however announced that the discovery is no cause for alarm and there is no need to panic as not many people are infected with this strain.

The co-author of the discovery, Dr Carole McAuthur from the University of Missouri also had the following to say about the new discovery

“This discovery reminds us that to end the HIV pandemic, we must continue to out think this continuously-changing virus and use the latest advancements in technology and resources to monitor its evolution,”
