CEO of Belfor Holdings, Sheldon Yellen has shared how a simple gesture of writing birthday letters to every one of his staff his colleagues have evolved into the company culture.
Yellen began writing to warm his colleagues to him 32 years ago after he was employed by his Brother-in-Law, but the gesture has since evolved to become a company-wide tradition with Supervisors doing the same and writing handwritten notes to their teammates yearly on their Birthdays.
Although the act may seem like a bother or unnecessary, Yellen says the rewards include a more cohesive team and the act encourages communication among the staff and Loyalty to the organization.
He also says he makes efforts to personalize the letters and refer to previous conversations which help the staff feel included and appreciated leading to a gracious and compassionate work environment for all.
