Based on new research, the consumption of fizzy drinks including healthier options like diet coke can significantly increase the risk of premature death by a quarter of your life.

The study revealed that of 450,000 people who participated, 26 per cent of them are more likely to die within the next 20 years.

To crunch the numbers, a single bottle of sugary drink can increase the chances of bowel, stomach and pancreatic tumour by a whopping 59 per cent. Taking two bottles could increase blot clots and spur deadly disorders of the arteries.

Dr Murphy who works at the International Agency of Research on Cancer in France adviced that drinking water is a much better option. He explained that the excess calories contribute to weight gain and obesity resulting in a high glycemic index.

In addition, he added that additional studies will be conducted to determine the long term health consequences of special artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and acesulfame potassium.
