Sushma Swaraj dies at 67 to heart attack

The Leader of the Hindu Nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, Sushma Swaraj has been confirmed dead at a hospital in New Delhi at 67 years of age due to a heart attack.

She was earlier rushed to the emergency ward of All India Institue of Medical Science hospital after a heart attack as reported by the Press Trust of India.

She functioned as the external affairs minister from 2014 to 2019 in Prime Minister Modi’s Cabinet and was popular for extending assistance to Indians in the diaspora.

Swaraj had earlier complained of health issues and underwent a kidney transplant, she did not run for the general elections as a result.

She began her political career in the 1970s after a law degree which influenced her contributions to India’s political landscape greatly, not only did she oppose an emergency rule by Indira Gandhi of the Congress Party, she eventually rose to the helm of affairs at the Bharatiya Janata Party. She was also the second woman to serve as India’s Foreign Minister after Indira Gandhi

Swaraj is survived by her family, her husband and daughter both of whom are advocates.
