Joaquin Guzman popularly known as El Chapo has yesterday been sentenced to life imprisonment by a U.S District Federal Judge, Brian Cogan.
El Chapo who had previously escaped maximum-security prisons twice is to spend his remaining days at a U.S penitentiary. He will also be forfeiting $12.6 billion
El Chapo, whose actions were described by the Judge as overwhelmingly evil allegedly paid a gang $1 million to try to kill him before the 30 years life imprisonment sentence was mandated by the Judge.
El Chapo was previously held in solitary confinement in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in lower Manhattan, where he requested for time to exercise on the roof; which was duly rejected by Cogan, citing security risks.
El Chapo disclosed that his time has been psychologically, emotionally and mentally torturous. he also disclosed that his trial was largely influenced by media perceptions which have influenced the jurors’ thoughts of him.
According to the drug lord, he said there was no justice in his hearing since he was going to be confined to a prison where his name would not be called ever again.
