Kenyans in Uproar as documentary exposes Supermarket selling Toxic Meat

A local Television Station, NTV recently brought to the limelight how some supermarkets in Kenya use toxic chemicals to preserve meat and make it look fresher for longer which has started a social media trend tagged #RedAlert.

The reporter, Dennis Okari conducted laboratory tests on such samples of meat preserved in these conditions. The results of the tests showed the samples had high levels of Sodium Metabisulphite.

The store owners after lasing their products with the chemical went on to change the expiry dates of the products and such last for 5 extra days

The chemicals found in the food when used within the recommended limits is safe according to food experts however excessive use could lead to nasal congestion, hives, skin rashes and itchy throat among consumers.

The danger with the storekeepers lasing the meat with the chemicals is that the chemical is so corrosive, they wear protective clothing and more than the recommended amounts used.

The use of chemicals to extend the lifespan of food items is illegal globally.
