The European Club Association’s (ECA) proposed reforms to the UEFA Champions League from 2024 suffered a severe blow as Italian Serie A clubs voted against the proposal.
The European Club Association (ECA) is working alongside UEFA on a proposal to reform the UEFA Champions League to a tournament that will feature promotion and relegations of clubs.
Juventus’ president, Andrea Agnelli, who also doubles as the chairman of the ECA, disclosed the reform will help clubs outside of Europe’s biggest five leagues to play more European matches regularly.
Fifteen Italian Serie A clubs voted against the proposal, with only Juventus agreeing with the reform.
Five clubs from the Serie A backed the current format, which exclusively uses performances in domestic leagues as a basis for qualifying for UEFA club competitions. Clubs such as AC Milan, Roma, Fiorentina and Inter Milan declined to vote.
Meanwhile, the Premier League, German Bundesliga and French Ligue 1 have already opposed the proposal.
