The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, June 12, 2019, as Public Holiday to commemorate the maiden National Democracy Day.

This is line with the enactment into law of June 12 annually as Democracy Day in Nigeria.

June 12 was declared the new Democracy Day by President Buhari last year in honor of late MKO Abiola who won the annulled election in 1993. Democracy Day was formerly held on May 29 which usually coincided with presidential and governorship inauguration day.

Last month, the Senior Special Assistant to the president Garba Shehu stated that the new Democracy Day will be made elaborate for the world to see it as Nigeria’s most important day.

“We want the world to see June 12 as this country’s most important (day) as far as democracy is concerned,” he said.
