Chelsea are ready to take a step up in the chase for Ajax Amsterdam’s exciting young attacker David Neres.

Last month, the Telegraph had reported the Chelsea were “monitoring” the 22-year-old. Now we’ve “joined the race”. Oh boy! Meanwhile the transfer ban is still in effect.

Neres, like many of his young teammates, has been quite impressive in his two and a half years at the curent Eredivisie champions and Champions League semifinalists, making 99 appearances with 29 goals and 32 assists across all competitions.

This season alone he recorded 12 goals and 15 assists. Neres is left-footed but is a natural right winger, although he is certainly capable on either flank. He registered 2.4 successful dribbles every 90 minutes of play in the Eredivisie this season, making him somewhat of a dribbling machine.

He has been so good for Ajax that Brazil national football team manager Tite was forced to take a look at the oft-forgotten Dutch league, and then call him up to his Copa América squad alongside to Everton’s Richarlison, Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino and Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus.

At club level, interest in Neres is already quite high, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain all paying attention. But Chelsea do have an advantage thanks to our good relationship with his agents, Giuliano Bertolucci and Kia Joorabchian. The duo represent several current and former Chelsea players, such as David Luiz, Kenedy and Oscar.

So if we manage to (or decide to) get the transfer ban frozen for the summer, we may very well go and make an attempt at Neres, especially now that Luka Jovic appears to be heading to Real Madrid. There’s plenty of competition for Neres, too, but it can’t hurt to try.
