Meng Wanzhou the Chief Financial Officer and daughter of Huawei’s founder, Ren Zhengfei seeks to defend herself by proving her innocence of all the charges levied against her.
The CFO was arrested in December by Canadian authorities at the request of the United States and was charged with bank and wire fraud relating to the American Sanctions levied on Iran.
Wanzhou’s defence team has argued that her arrest in Canada is unlawful as the crime she is accused of by the U.S also needs to be a crime in Canada as since Canada doesn’t have current sanctions on financial services in Iran, the charges levied against her don’t hold water.
They also argued that her arraignment is politically motivated, citing that President Trump’s statements were ‘intimidating and coercive’
Meng Wanzhou is due to appear in court again for September 23, and has received new bail terms which allow for her to relocate to a bigger residence, however, she will continue to wear a tracker and ankle bracelet.
