Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has approved the bill passed by the Kano State House of Assembly effectively splitting Kano into 5 Emirates listed as Kano, Rano, Gaya, Karaye and Bichi.
The splitting otf the Emirates will allow for the decentralisation of the Kano Emirates Council, it also means that the influence of the Emir of Kano, Mohammed Sanusi will be reduced. Ganduje has been quoted as saying the decentralisation will hasten development in the State.
According to Baffa Danagundi, the House Majority Leader, the decision was made after wide consultations and public support of the decision and the bill was unanimously approved the passage of the bill.
Some groups such as the Kano First Forum, however, rebuffed the new law allowing for more emirates promising to fight to ensure that the current status quo is maintained.
