Two Reuters journalists sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for deriding the Official Secrets Act in April have been granted an Official Pardon.

The reporters identified as Wa Lone, 33 and Kyaw Soe Ooo, 29 sparked a general outcry from diplomats and human rights advocates questioning Myanmar’s democracy transition.

President Win Myint granted them amnesty including 6,518 other prisoners earlier today which coincides with the traditional New Year.

The journalists upon release after spending close to 500 days in jail, expressed gratitude for the international efforts taken to secure their release.
