Maurizio Sarri could be offered a return to Italy this summer after an indifferent maiden campaign with Chelsea – with Roma considering a swoop for the manager.

The Italian coach has endured a tough first season at Stamford Bridge despite succeeding in leading the club back to Champions League football.

The Blues have secured a top-four spot in the Premier League with one game to spare, but that has not stopped reports linking Sarri with an exit at the end of the season.

The Telegraph has claimed that Roma are ready to offer the manager at escape route by making him their new boss.

Antonio Conte, the former Chelsea boss, was rumoured to be closing in on a return to football management with Roma but he has turned down their advances.

Sarri, who impressed in Serie A with Napoli, is their second-choice and is reportedly keen on a return to his homeland.

Chelsea may well be open to any approach, given they were twice close to sacking the manager this season before he turned their season around.

Despite achieving his target of guiding them back to the top four, his style-of-play has often been criticised by large sections of the Stamford Bridge support.

They are also in with a chance of lifting silverware, with Sarri’s side hosting Eintracht Frankfurt in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final this Thursday.

But this season hasn’t been without turmoil for the boss, and Chelsea fans have chanted against Sarri on numerous occasions this season.
