Caster Semenya has recently lost in an appeal case against the IAAF’s new rules requiring her to take hormone altering drugs to compete professionally with women due high levels of testosterone which they have claimed is unfair to other athletes or compete with men because of her unfair advantage.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected the appeal but however labelled the regulations as discriminatory. According to them,

“such discrimination is a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of achieving the IAAF’s aim of preserving the integrity of female athletics.”

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNCHR) had earlier in a press release thrown their support behind Semenya in a resolution co-sponsored by Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini and other Countries.

A pertinent issue then comes to mind, is any discrimination ever necessary?
