Food aid delivered in cyclone-ravaged Mozambique, death toll jumps to 38

The World Food Programme delivered emergency food and aid to residents of cyclone-ravaged Mozambique on Monday (April 29) as rainfall hampered efforts, four days after Cyclone Kenneth pummelled the area.

The death toll has risen from five to 38, the country’s disaster management institute said on Monday.

Cyclone Kenneth made landfall on Mozambique’s northern coast on Thursday (April 25), packing storm surges and wind gusts of up to 280 km per hour.

Since then it has dumped heavy rain on the region, causing floods.

The disaster has stretched resources in a region still recovering from Cyclone Idai which struck further south in March.

The United Nations said it had released $13 million in emergency funds for Mozambique and the Comoros to provide food and water and repair infrastructure.

The World Food Programme said there were fears for 700,000 people who remain at risk, as rain continues to fall and floodwaters rise.

At least 3,000 homes were destroyed by the cyclone.
