Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena said on Tuesday (April 23) he would change the heads of the country’s defence forces following their failure to prevent suicide bombs that killed over 300 people, despite the fact that they had prior information about the attacks.

In a televised address to the nation, Sirisena said the changes would happen within 24 hours.

Indian intelligence officers contacted their Sri Lankan counterparts two hours before the first attack to warn of a specific threat on churches, one Sri Lankan defence source and an Indian government source told Reuters.

Another Sri Lankan defence source said a warning came “hours before” the first strike.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks on Tuesday, without providing evidence of its involvement.
