President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday finally signed the Minimum Wage Repeal and Reenactment Bill, 2019, into law.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Senate had on March 19, approved N30,000 as the new national minimum wage with an appeal to the Federal Government to expedite action on assent and implementation.

Following the signing of the bill, Nigerians took to their Twitter handles to express their views on the development.

Their tweets read thus: @Ariyo758628: “MinimumWage I hope and pray that the FG will not use the newly signed minimum wage to Rob Peter to pay Paul because I can’t understand HM IK landing cost theory onibara ba ole boo noni.”

@Ericlangager: “What is the best way to help poor people? By giving them money and encouraging them to become dependent, or by creating jobs so that they can better themselves and live independent lives?

@princyng: “Minimum wage that has side effects…Hope this has nothing to do with his legal faceoff with Atiku….

@nnamdi_obinwa: “MinimumWage now 30k. Very impressive and a step in the right direction. But it wouldn’t change anything if I don’t receive my salary on a regular basis. Pay me right and pay me when due @MBuhari.”

@prycessa: “Yes I know they will say it’s a start 30k minimum wage.. it’s no silly start, it’s not even up to 100$, it’s really sad to see this been celebrated in Nigeria. I want better for my country damn!!! #minimumwage #30k.”

@Its_abdulhameed: “Lmao #MinimumWage. You will soon see it’s true meaning. It will not help the economy.”

@dabiri_adewale: “Can Mr President’s children survive on 30k per week?? #Minimumwage.”

@FestusOgukwe: “The reason you have to learn, master a high income skill to break forth out of poverty.”

@Als_Saladiwa: “#Minimumwage has been consented by the @NGRPresident amid lots of questions begging for answers. Will the VAT rate remain the same? Or is going to be carrot and stick approach.”
@adeyanjudeji: “BREAKING: Buhari signs minimum wage into law. Kudos to the 8th National Assembly and the president for signing.”

@walebakare: “I commend @MBuhari for signing into law the N30,000 Minimum Wage Bill passed by the National Assembly. Recall that Buhari & some state governors had in the Executive Bill sought the approval of N27,000. @nassnigeria amended Clause 3(1) to effect the N30,000 approval. #MInimumWage.”

@d_legal_ eagle: “With the increase in the minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000; @MBuhari has once again strengthened his commitment to making life easier for Nigerians.
This is indeed, the breath of FRESH AIR! #SaiBaba APC- igbe aye rere.”
