Former IGP Solomon Arase has attributed the brutality of the police towards citizens to the ‘policing culture’.
Arase disclosed this in an exclusive interview with Plus TV Africa on Tuesday.
The former IGP said the policing culture we inherited from the colonial masters was that which involved brutality, as that was how they dominated the country when they came.
“The policing culture we inherited from the Brits is the Irish model of policing, which is based on Forced harassments.”
Arase further expressed his concerns as Nigeria has failed to adopt the best international police practices after gaining independence since 1960.
“The missing link is that when we got independence, we should have been able to incorporate the best international police practices that the British people imbibed, which is citizens consent.”
“You cannot police a state without the citizens’ consent. So that is the missing link we have always had”
