9 People sentenced to Jail for Open Defecation in Ekiti State

Ten different individuals in Ekiti State have been arraigned for different sanitation offences such as Non-
availability of toilet facilities in their houses, non-availability of waste bins, and defecating in the open.

The presiding Judge, Mr Adeosun Abayomi of the Aramoko Magistrates’ Court has earlier today sentenced 9 people including a Chief to 6 months in prison for Open Defecation with the option of Bail from ₦5,000 to ₦15,000.

The culprits have been identified as Pastor Olaleye Isaac, Chief Ologun Ala, Mr Agboola M, Mr Atoro, Mr Adetoyinbo, Mr Adesoba Sunday, Chief Jacob Taiwo, Mr Titus Ibironke and Mrs Olu Obateru, all in Ekiti West Local Government Area of Ekiti state.

He described their actions as an environmental nuisance and issued a warrant for others who failed to appear in court for similar offences.

In Ekiti State, open defecation and non provision of Toilets is considered a very serious offence and as such has mandated Landlords to have at least one toilet in their houses.
