ICPC will not be probing politicians for vote buying, selling or other acts of electoral malpractices which transpired during the last elections.
This was revealed by the new Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Prof Bolaji Owasanoye.
Owasanoye said that the commission would not be embarking on the investigation of politicians for electoral malpractices committed during the last general elections.
Prior to the elections, the commission had pledged its support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to curb the process of vote-buying and monitor the spending of politicians’ during campaigns and other activities towards the elections.
Speaking in Abuja, Owasanoye said, “INEC entered into partnership with civil society organisations and corruption-fighting agencies, including the ICPC.
“I was in the situation room for the elections and we did what we had to do to ensure that Nigeria had credible elections.
“There is no suspect under investigation for electoral fraud. For now, we are not investigating anyone for financial crimes during the elections.” He, however, regretted that some politicians preferred to plead not guilty, even when they were not innocent, because of the consideration for their ambitions
