Yesterday was Christmas for some 258 patients who were relieved of their outstanding debts at the Kenyatta National Hospital after a public outcry. Most families of the detained patients could not raise the huge sums the hospital demanded for treating their relations.
Contrary to popular notions, the Kenyatta National Hospital Board chairman, James Kamau has disclosed that the patients were not detained but had not attained complete clearing. He also disclosed that close to 30% of patients involved in accidents were unable to settle their hospital bills and as a result the institution is owed Sh5.6 billion in debt since 2003.
