150,000 children in burkina faso

Education minister Stanislas Ouaro has said more than one hundred and fifty thousand children are not going to school in Burkina Faso because of the threat of jihadist violence, warning of a “deteriorating” situation in the West African nation.

More than 1,100 schools have been forced to close or temporarily shut down due to assaults and threats by radical Islamists.

The school year began in October 2018 but some five thousand teachers are unable to work, one thousand, one hundred and thirty-five schools closed, with one hundred and fifty-four thousand, two hundred and thirty-three students prevented from attending classes.

Last week the United Nations and the government highlighted the number of school closures in Burkina Faso and said more than a million people were in “critical need” of humanitarian aid as they plan to raise $100 million to provide food, water, housing and healthcare.
