Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday, became the first state government to establish an airline.
The state-owned airline, Ibom Air, was launched with funfair at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo.
At exactly 1:40 pm Nigerian time, the first of the three aircraft in the Ibom Air fleet touched down at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, to tumultuous applause from indigenes and well-wishers who thronged the airport to witness.
Special guest of honour and Senate President, Bukola Saraki said Governor Udom Emmanuel was a beacon of hope in Nigeria with the feat achieved.
Governor Emmanuel said he was fulfilled and that more was coming.
Former Governor Victor Attah and others were elated at the achievement.
Ibom Air is to fly the Lagos – Uyo, Uyo – Abuja, and Lagos – Abuja routes and will increase the fleet to between 15 and 20 aircraft before the next four years.
