Spanish Super Cup undergoes reforms

The Spanish Super Cup also known as the Supercopa de Espana, is set to undergo a series of reforms, one of which is for the game to be played abroad.

The new proposal would have the Supercopa de Espana as a four-team tournament; comprising of the two Copa del Rey finalists and the top two in La Liga vying for the trophy.

It will also have both semifinal fixtures and the final played outside Spain. Spanish football bosses hope to stage the revamped Supercopa de Espana prior to the commencement of next season, though the proposals are yet to be approved.

The 2018 edition of the tourney took place in Morocco between Barcelona and Sevilla as a one-off game, which the former won.

There is optimism from the Spanish football hierarchy that the new format will generate more interest for the competition.
