Cab Drivers in Madrid, Spain protest by blocking Roads

Hundreds of taxis blocked a stretch of the Paseo de la Castellana, one of Madrid’s main roads, as part to protest against the online ride-hailing sector in the early hours of this morning.

The taxi drivers have been striking against services like Uber and Cabify, which offer rides that undercut taxi prices online rather than being hailed in the street, since Monday (January 21), complaining that regulations are being ignored and complaining of unfair competition.

In September, 2018 Spain’s government gave the ride-hailing companies four years to comply with regulations granting them just one new licence for every 30 taxi licences.

The regulation also permitted Spanish regions to adopt their own restrictions on the services as they see fit.
