Australian Open 2019: Djokovic, Poullie reach semifinals

Six-time Australian Open champion, Novak Djokovic booked his place in the last four of the Australian Open following the retirement of eighth-seeded Kei Nishikori.

The Japanese was trailing 6-1, 4-1 when he retired due to a thigh injury. Nishikori had spent over 14 hours on court at this year’s tourney and the physical strain, wear and tear was apparent as he struggled with his mobility all through the encounter.

24-year old Frenchman, Lucas Pouille reached his maiden Grand Slam semi-final after edging 16th seeded Milos Raonic 7-6 (7/4), 6-3, 6-7 (2/7), 6-4.

The Frenchman who had not won a singles match at the Australian Open prior to this year’s tournament was imperious with his returns and serves as he caused an upset.

He faces Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.
