Across the nation, people came out to mark the 2019 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in honour of Nigeria’s service men and women.

Issues of improved welfare and conditions for servicemen, families of fallen soldiers and veterans took centre stage at the parades held in major cities.

In Uyo, Governor Udom Emmanuel led other dignitaries to the parade ground to pay tribute to men and women of the armed forces.

He said their sacrifice will not be forgotten and their labour not in vein.

In Umuahia, the death of many soldiers was described as a great loss to the nation.

In Imo, three widows were presented with cars by Governor Okorocha, who said Nigeria will be greater if her citizens imbibed the spirit of sacrifice.

War veterans in Edo, Plateau, and Katsina States are worried about the inability of government to effectively improve the welfare of families of fallen heroes.

In Cross River State, a case was made for the granting of scholarship to children of late servicemen, while in Taraba, cash donations were made to the veterans group by the Governor, Darius Ishaku.

It is expected that promises given will not end at the parades, but will be fulfilled in honour of the memory of fallen heroes, veterans, and their families.
