The Federal Executive Council has approved a new policy framework for the maintenance of public buildings in the country.

The approval follows a memo presented by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola to the council at its weekly meeting held on Wednesday at the state House, Abuja.

The new policy framework according to the Minister is expected to address the longstanding issue of poor maintenance of public assets in the country.

Fashola also said the policy is a deliberate move by the government to create a value chain in the informal sector of the economy leading to job opportunities for trained local artisans such as tilers, bricklayers, painters, wielders among others.

The Minister also made a presentation to council a pilot scheme of the new maintenance policy conducted in nine government institutions.

Meanwhile, 812.5 million Naira was approved to engage nine land surveying companies to demarcate the lands that would be affected by the construction of the Mambilla hydropower project.

FEC also granted operational licenses to four new private Universities. The newly approved universities are Greenfield University in Kaduna, Dominion University in Oyo, Westland University in Osun and Trinity University in Ogun state.
