Power generation grid records first collapse in 3 months

According to recent data from the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Nigeria’s power grid has suffered a total collapse for the first time in three months.

The grid collapsed on December 21, increasing the number of collapses recorded so far this year to 12.

A breakdown of the total collapses saw January recording five, February one, June and July recording one as well. In the month of  September two were recorded and December one while one partial collapse was recorded in April.

According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, a total system collapse means total blackout nationwide, while partial system collapse is a failure of a section of the grid.

Nigeria continues to  generate most of its electricity from gas-fired power plants, while the output from hydropower plants makes up about 30 per cent of the total.
