Pakistani court to announce verdict on former PM Nawaz Sharif

According to local media, a court in Pakistan is expected to deliver judgement in two remaining corruption cases against ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on his birthday on Monday (December 24).

Reports said the Islamabad-based accountability court will announce the verdict following the completion of hearings for the Flagship Investment and Al-Azizia cases, for which the Sharif family had been charged for money laundering, hiding offshore assets and tax evasion.

Nawaz Sharif faces up to 14 years in jail if found guilty.

In September, Pakistan’s high court ordered the release from jail of Sharif and his daughter, suspending the sentences they received from an accountability court in July.

Sharif’s party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which had been in power for five years, lost to the party of former cricket star Imran Khan in the election in July, 2018.
