Uganda Police has confirmed casualty figures from a boat accident on Saturday.

Thirty people have been confirmed dead, twenty-seven rescued and sixty still unaccounted for so far.

The boat is said to have more than 80 passengers, including top female local artist Irene Namubiru and Prince of Buganda Kingdom Daudi KintuWassajja who miraculously survived the shipwreck.

According to Uganda Police Marines team, the unfortunate boat sank because of bad weather, overloading, shortage of life jackets, and the fact that many local people cannot swim making it the latest deadly incident to affect passenger boats on Africa’s largest lake.

In September, hundreds of passengers died when the MV Nyerere passenger ferry sank on the Tanzanian side of Lake Victoria, which is also shared by Kenya, making it a site of deadly and many boat disasters in the East Africa region.
