Hate parking? This car shrinks itself to fit

The latest entry into the market for tiny cars that can fit into tiny parking spaces may come from Israel, with a concept electric vehicle that can shrink its wheelbase to the size of a motorcycle.

The Chief innovation officer for City Transformer, Udi Meridor, said:

“Since it’s so lightweight and the capacity of the battery is pretty small, so we can use a home socket from a regular electricity socket, or we can use a fast charger from a charging station that we will deploy or use another third party.”

The latest entry into the market for super tiny cars that can fit into super tiny parking spaces may come from Israel.

With a car that, that’s right, can shrink itself.

Shrink it’s width, that is, to about that of a motorcycle.

Compare that to a bigger branded tiny car like the Smart Fortwo which is over five feet wide and can’t shrink.

The startup behind it, City Transformer, says it will also cost a lot less than a new Smart when it’s released in about a year: $13,000 as a opposed to over $20,000.

City transformer CEO Asaf Formoza said:

“We waste lots of valuable time in the traffic and looking for parking spots and that’s why we came with the idea and we started it from scratch and we came with this hybrid solution (…) This is the future for all manner of transportation.”

The global market for electric cars like this is rapidly expanding but trends suggest the appetite for compact cars may be slowing, particularly in North America.

It will be interesting to see where this car fits in.
