O’Neil and Keane quit Rep of Ireland roles

After the meeting with the chief executive of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), John Delaney, the FAI has parted ways with its national team coaches, Martin O’Neil and Roy Keane by mutual agreement.

Martin O’Neil was in charge of the Irish national team for five years along with Roy Keane, his assistant, as they led the Republic of Ireland to the qualification of the Euro 2016 championship as well as advancing to the knockout stages of the tournament. However, he failed to qualify the Irish team to the 2018 World Cup, losing the play-off 5-1 to Denmark.

The FAI confirmed the board will have a prompt meeting to discuss the process of recruiting replacements as quickly as possible, with Steve Bruce, Mick McCarthy and Dundalk manager, Stephen Kenny touted as candidates. Alongside O’Neil and Keane’s exit, coaches Steve Guppy and Seamus McDonagh have also left their positions.
