Case Dropped against Myanmar journalist facing Incitement charges

The case against three senior journalists has been dismissed by a Myanmar court on Friday after authorities in the city of Yangon agreed to drop the charges.

Eleven Media’s chief reporter, Phyo Wai Win, and two editors, Kyaw Zaw Lin and Nayi Min, were arrested on Oct. 10 for incitement after publishing an article that quoted lawmakers raising questions overspending by the Yangon city government.

According to their lawyer, Kyee Myint, the Yangon government had sent a letter to the court asking to drop the charges and take up their grievance through arbitration at Myanmar’s Press Council.

“If they do not follow and if negotiation by the press council is not a success, we will continue this case legally,” he said.
In late 2016, Eleven Media’s chief executive and another editor were detained for nearly two months over a complaint made by Phyo Min Thein over a Facebook post alleging corruption.
