The abrogation of the caste system, which forbids some people from a particular area of Imo State from socializing and marrying others outside their caste, has been welcomed.

The resolution was reached during a meeting that was organized by the Initiative for The Eradication of Traditional and Cultural Stigmatization in Our Society, which is a Civil Society Group.

Commonly known as Osu, Diala, and Ohu, they are now considered free and should be recognised as equal citizens.

This follows the decision of twenty-four traditional rulers on Monday in Oguta local government area of the state, who approved the scrapping of the tradition that dehumanizes the persons.

By so doing, the people have been freed from the constant stigmatization that comes with being considered outcasts.

According to the royal heads, the caste system was the cause of the disgrace, suffering, shame and poverty experienced by people who are essentially considered slaves.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Osu/Diala caste system which exists mainly in Igbo land denies the persons certain rights in their communities.
