Highly experienced British boxing referee, Steve Gray, will be the man standing between them when Anthony Joshua defends his WBA ‘super’, WBO, IBF and IBO titles against Alexander Povetkin this weekend.
It will mark the fifth time that Gray has officiated Joshua’s bouts; the previous four bouts were against Matt Legg, Matt Skelton, Konstantin Airich and Eric Molina.
World title fights on British soil do not necessarily have to be officiated by a British referee, as an official from a neutral country can officiate if the visiting fighter requests; the Anthony Joshua Wladimir Klitschko bout was refereed by America’s David Fields.
