The South African Constitutional Court on Tuesday, made the private use of marijuana legal.
This ruling follows a regional high court in 2017 that established that the use of cannabis in private areas should be permitted because the laws against it were not consistent with South Africa’s constitution.
The Constitutional Court confirmed the high court’s findings when the state appealed.
According to Judge Raymond Zondo in his ruling, ”It will not be a criminal offence for an adult person to use or be in possession of cannabis in private space.”
The ruling, however, did not specify the quantity of cannabis a person may have at their home for private use.
TV channel eNCA captured the celebrations that broke out in the court, which was filled with cannabis campaigners and members of the South African Rastafarian populace.
