The Italian FA’s state tribunal has punished Chievo Verona for transfer fraud after the club was found guilty of incorrect accountancy practices regarding a transfer of players from and to Cesena over the past years.

Chievo Verona has been docked three points, fined £200,000 and club president, Luca Campedelli, banned for three months.

With Chievo having a point from three games in the Serie A thus far, it means the Flying Donkeys will now have -2 points.

Chievo initially faced the prospect of being demoted to Serie B, but the investigation into the club’s transfer activities was ruled null and void by the FIGC courts because club president, Campedelli was not allowed to testify.

With the Serie A and Serie B leagues currently underway, retrospective punishment could no longer be applied, hence the presiding judge deemed a three-point deduction, fine and ban as an adequate reprimand.

Luca Campedelli and his club, Chievo Verona, were found guilty of inflating the value of mostly youth players bought and sold between themselves and Cesena from 2015 to 2018; an act carried out to enhance the value of both clubs, thereby ensuring they obtain licences for the past three seasons.

Cesena’s case was dropped because the club went bankrupt this summer, though the club’s advisors, Guido Aldini and Samuele Mariotti have been banned from football for 45 days.
