Liberia’s president, George Weah, played in the international friendly between Liberia and Nigeria at the age of 51.

George Oppong Weah, who remains the only African footballer to win FIFA’s World Player of the Year award, was on the field for 79 minutes as his nation lost by two goals to one to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Monrovia.

The friendly was organized to retire Liberia’s number 14 shirt, worn by Weah at his playing peak; he received a standing ovation when substituted.

Nigeria fielded a strong team that included Leicester City duo of Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Ihenacho as well as Stoke City’s Peter Etebo. Nigeria’s goals came through Simeon Nwankwo and Henry Onyekuru, while Kpah Sherman scored a late penalty.
