UEFA is set to add a third European club competition to its calendar starting from the year 2021.

This was disclosed by Andrea Agnelli, who doubles as a member of UEFA’s executive committee and the chairman of the European Club Association (ECA).

He revealed this at the ECA’s annual general assembly in Croatia, stating that the “green light has been given”.

Having revealed that the third competition will increase the number of teams competing in European club competitions to 96, it means the new competition will involve 16 teams, as currently, the UEFA Champions League involves 32 teams while the UEFA Europa League involves 48.

The Cup Winners’ Cup – for domestic cup champions which was scrapped in 1999 is being touted to return as the third club competition.
