Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has warned the Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad across the country to respect people’s rights or risk being punished.

Idris who said that one had to volunteer to be part of FSARS, asked those who cannot cope with the changes in the unit to quit.

According to him, henceforth, any FSARS officer who detains a suspect beyond 48 hours without recourse to the courts, risks being dismissed.

The IGP said the new conditions of the overhauled SARS requires officers of the unit to go through medical examinations, especially mental and psychological tests, adding that a counseling department is currently in place in the unit.

According to him, FSARS officers have been barred from searching the handsets and laptops of law-abiding citizens, unless the search is directly in connection with a case, or they have been directed by the IGP or any person or persons who can order such.

He declared that a custody management system has been established in the unit to keep records and provide access to information regarding suspects.
