The health ministry of Congo Republic has on Tuesday confirmed one case of yellow fever close to the border with an Angolan enclave, warning of an emerging event of epidemic proportions.

According to a weekly report by the World Health Organization, the confirmed victim traveled in Tchiamba Nzassi district, along the border with the Angolan enclave of Cabinda, two weeks before the symptoms surfaced.

Lambert Kitembo, the head of the government’s epidemics unit said eight blood samples were sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for testing last month, and one was returned as positive. It was then officially confirmed last week at a laboratory in Senegal.

So far no deaths have been reported, however, the situation is being taken seriously by health officials, Kitembo added.
