Inspector General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris has ordered all Special Anti-Robbery Squad personnel, now to be known as FSARS, to wear the Police uniform.
According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, AG. DCP Jimoh Moshood, the police will also launch Rights Desks in every state of the nation to respond to cases of violations against members of the public by FSARS personnel in partnership with other Human Rights organizations.
The statement also said that the recruitment and mobilization of FSARS personnel will be stricter as those interested in joining would be required to go through painstaking orientation, Human Rights education and other screening that would include an assessment of their Human Rights history.
The police also confirmed that a Custody Records Management System which would hold details of arrests, detainment and welfare information of suspects, would soon be set up.
The police clarified that this would drastically reduce if not stop the random arrest of people, and ensure that suspects are prosecuted within 24 hours of arrest according to the law.
The statement added that psychologists and counselors are involved in the current screening of FSARS operatives.
Mr. Segun Awosanya, a social media activist who spearheaded the #ENDSARS Campaign, praised the Presidency for the swift overhaul of SARS, noting that the government is a listening one.
The activist said he would continue to support the Police Force and declared an end to the #ENDSARS campaign with the overhaul of SARS and the new FSARS arrangement.
