A South Sudanese refugee, Akon Guode, who killed three of her children by deliberately driving them into a lake in Australia, has had her sentence reduced on appeal.
Guode who was convicted in 2017 for killing one-year-old Bol, and four-year-old twins, Hanger and Madit, in Melbourne in 2015, never gave any motive for her actions.
The original 26-year jail term was reduced to 18 years on Thursday, August 16.
Chief Justice Anne Ferguson in the ruling said the “manifestly excessive” first sentence had not given enough weight to Guode’s mental state, and the trauma she had endured in South Sudan.
